March 1988 - The headline in THE PROGRESS read, "LAST COAL TRAIN ON CLEARFIELD'S THIRD STREET PASSING THROUGH ON MARCH 16, 1988".
It was reported that hundreds of people thronged to see the last train roll though downtown.  People placed coins on the track as a souvenir of the day as they waved American flags, took pictures and picked up stray pieces of coal that flew out of the coal cars.  The last train was a 37 car Conrail coal train.  It was printed that people "heard that train a comin" down the tracks of for the final journey down Third Street.  People waved to the caboose as it rolled away.
