Preface

I BEGAN THINKING OF writing a book about our Bloom family history in 2009. Over the years I had spoken with various relatives about our ancestors, who they were, and where they came from. Almost every generation had different information and often the stories I heard did not agree. After talking with some relatives of my generation I began research for the book. It began with information provided by my cousin Carol Hockenberry, and later on line.

I quickly found that many people have been working on our family's history; most of them beginning with Wilhelm (William) Bloom Sr. of Clearfield County, the eldest son of the ancestor named in the title of this book. There were varying ancestor names, more than a few different locations in Germany where our ancestors purportedly emigrated from, and questionable sources.

After gathering as much information regarding the subject as I could, I came to the conclusion that most of the available ancestral information for Johann Peter Blum 1772-1814) of Hunterdon County, New Jersey, was erroneous. This includes on line internet information and written documents found in many historical societies and libraries. My conclusion is based on a large amount of circumstantial evidence, described later in the book, and a serious lack of good documentary evidence to support the conclusions of other writers.
